Milan Fashion Week: Dolce & Gabbana bid farewall to the D&G brand

D&G Spring 2012 collection at Milan last week was as glamorous as ever.   Models strolled down the catwalk in sexy printed dresses, gold jewelry, sleek handbags and one of a kind ankle tie pumps.  The designers, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana once again dazzled the crowd with an over the edge collection targeting the youthful trendy consumer.  But to everybody dismay, once the show was over, the designers confirmed the rumors that D&G will no longer exist as a secondary brand to its Dolce and Gabbana line, putting an end to months of speculation in the matter.

It is not uncommon for luxury designers to add a less expensive brand to attract a wider range of consumers.  The right segmentation and positioning is key to achieve marketing success and profitability in both brands.  In the case of D&G, the brand was highly profitability to the franchise - which is still a private company - to the tune of 45% share in a $2.2B business.  However, the lack of differentiation both in the label and price has caused many consumers of the most expensive Dolce & Gabbana brand to switch to its less expensive, lower margin business.  To avoid further deterioration of its core business, the designers opted to end the D&G line and stick to its luxury brand.  "Now we focus on what is Dolce & Gabbana," explained Stefano Gabbana who stresses that he wants to focus on his legacy and be remembered by its top line brand.

So, as D&G says goodbye to the fashion world, let's take a moment to cherish the best looks of its last runaway collection.

On the wild side: Michael Kors 2012 Spring/Summer Collection @ NY Fashion Week

I became a fan of Michael Kors recently when I started watching Project Runway.  Alongside with Heidi Klum and Nina Garcia, the trio is in search of the next designer who is able to combine both creativity and style without compromising commercial appeal.  After all, to be successful you have to make clothes that women will want to buy.

That is why I love his 2012 Spring/Summer collection featured at the NY Fashion Week.  The designer took a gamble by imposing a safari inspired theme to the collection which featured earth tone colors mixed with animal prints and large buckled belts and bags.  I love how simple and wearable the clothes are with great style and definitely a huge "wow" factor. Here are my favorite looks.

Let me know if you are a fan of this collection as well.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York: the J. Crew story

J. Crew 2012 Spring collection debut at the MB Fashion Week New York

After Miami hosted the relaxed, cool beach vibe swimsuit fashion week back in July, the fashion world now turns its eyes to the Big Apple.  New York is home of the MB Fashion Week from September 8-15th at the Lincoln center where 99 designers, thousands of fashion insiders and celebrities are gathered to see the Spring 2012 collections.

This year's show includes the glamour of veteran designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang and Michael Kors, but it also marks the first of many brands that are making its debut in the runaway such as J. Crew.  Not a bad move specially given today's economic downturn.  High-end retailers are among the few companies that have reported higher earning during this period, so positioning your brand as a "fashion" icon as opposed to a "popular" mass market brand gives the company instant access to thousands of consumers that are less sensitive to the economy and are always looking for something special.

The fashion week debut is also giving the company instant publicity to launch its brand internationally - J. Crew is launching its online site at the UK tomorrow.  So, J. Crew has officially blurred the line between high-end and low-end markets and it will be interesting to see how it will impact the company's future earnings. For now, let's enjoy their collection which highlights the signature American casual look, with bold colors and elegant style.  I also love the accessories - bags, pumps, hats and jewelry complete the looks to make a big fashion statement.

Fashion night out: Fall Trends fashion show

Drinks, cocktails, music, friends and fabulous clothes are just some of the things you missed if you did not attend this year Fall Trends fashion show at the Neiman Marcus store in Bal Harbour.  It was a first for me, but definitely not the last.  I had a great time sipping wine, meeting new friends and enjoying my first runaway show with gorgeous styles by Valentino, Prada, Alexander McQueen and Oscar de la Renta among others.

The trends for the fall season highlighted in the show include: Colorblocking, Handheld bags, Bold Gold, LadyChic, Bordeaux and Pumps.

Let's start with Colorblocking which is very familiar to us by now.  This trend continues into the fall but the bright colors are transformed into the beautiful autumn tones like pumpkin orange and brown leaves.  Here are the runaway looks:

Second, I have to talk about Pumps because I absolutely loved this Alexander McQueen heart shaped pump displayed in the store.  After all what's not to love?  High heels, animal prints, bourdeaux accents and a to die for heart shaped peep toe.  It doesn't come cheap though, with a $955 price tag it is only good for my eyes, not my toes... unfortunately!!!

Another accessory turned into trend is the Handheld bag.  I love the runaway look below combining the handheld bag and the hat in Bourdeaux, which is another must have trend.  Since we cannot talk about fashion without the French influence, this deep purple color reminiscent of the French Bourdeaux wine made it to the runaway once again this year.  Finally, the last accessory trend for the Fall is Bold Gold jewelry, where large cuffs and tiered necklaces are definitely in.

Lastly, I hope we all have some LadyChic trend in all of us this fall.

So, at the end, itt was a great Fashion night out... some of us couldn't get enough!!!

Hope to see you next time.  Until then, keep looking fabulous!!!

Trend Alert: Color Block

I have been mentioning color block as a trend in my previous posts, so I figured it's time to give its proper time and attention with a post of its own.

Let's start with the basics, what is color block?  Color blocking as the name implies is the pairing of two or more bold colors that you normally wouldn't wear together - think reds and fuchsia, tangerine and purple.  It gives you plenty of room to be creative and the final result has been said to make women look slimmer due to an elongating figure.  Needless to say, they also look fabulous as some of the celebrities below.

This trend is not new, however, this time around it is hard to ignore with so much popularity.  Designers all over the world embraced this trend in their spring/summer 2011 collection and here are my favorite runaway looks.

By now, if you are like me, you are asking yourself how to pull this look off as a regulary gal, right?  Well, lucky you, I came up with a solution.  I've been thinking about this a while since I know that #1, this look is expensive because you need to buy an entire ensemble and  #2, you probably are not going to wear it very frequently.  So, how to solve this fashionista dilemma and still look fabulously trendy?  Think accessories, accessories, accessories!!!

You heard it first here at "miami, moda and more...".  Accessories are the way to go.  It's a simple, inexpensive and easy way to pull off the color block trending without breaking the bank.  Check out my favorite accessories:

As you can see, you can probably start off with somethings you already have stashed in your closet.  The list above includes:
1.Wide heel sandal ZARA 2.Suede mini grab bag ASOS 3.Suede and leather clutch MARC JACOBS 4.Three-tone ballerina ZARA 5.Shoulder bag MEREDITH WENDELL 6.Platform sandal JUNKO SHIMADA 7.Leather wallet COMME DES GARÇONS 8.Two-tone leather belt JIL SANDER

So girlfriends, I did my homework.  These are the color blocking accessories that I found in my closet.  What hidden treasures are you going to find in yours???  Let me know, I'm dying to find out.
xoxo.
